Like it seems like dudes are trying so hard now

This made me think of it

I like Marc Maron and his Theo Von impression was spot on, but hes def not naturally funny

Im talking like Katt Williams, Patrice O'Neal, Bernie Mac, and Kevin Hart

I dont think the answer is just that they can't tell the jokes they want to tell

I don't know why you put Kevin Hart there
He's not funny at all
All his standups are not funny, and I never bust even one laugh at any of his movies.

The funniest guy right now to me is Bill Burr

But ya comedy is not dead but it's dead compared to how funny it used to be.

And no it has nothing to do with political correctness.
When comedy was funny it's not like they were dissing everyone back then

I feel like a lot of up and coming talent stunts their own growth by releasing all their jokes on social media one at a time. in short format

Comedians back in the day, (and a lot still currently) used to curate a set over multiple small shows sometimes over the course of years. Before releasing a fully realized comedy routine. album or special.

How you supposed to release a classic like Eddie Murphy Delirious. If everybody has already heard all of your jokes on youtube?

That's the reason Dave Chappelle does small venues and asks people not to record. He can do the jokes, figure out which ones work and eventually do a netflix special and the majority of the audience will be hearing them for the first time.

A youtube comedian who finally gets enough exposure for a big comedy special, is at a disadvantage cause now they have to come up with all new jokes nobody has heard, but they have no time to vet them out. as a result the standup they do ends up being very mid

This was a long winded post so i will just summarize it,

Comedians aren't less naturally funny. They just make it hard on themselves because they expose all their jokes to widest possible audience as soon as they write it.
Means they have to write more jokes to stay relevant.

Comedy isn't like music, you can't release a few singles then put them on an album later and expect people to still buy it. They always want to hear something new. Not one of your classic hits.

The people you used as examples are confusing. How is Marc not naturally funny but Kevin Hart is?

Then you talk about telling jokes, A LOT of times the 'naturally funny' guys aren't even that good at telling jokes. Like Chris Rock will tell you himself that Mike Epps is naturally funnier than he is, doesn't mean he's a better comic. shyt Kat's shay shay interview is better than the majority of his specials because as naturally funny as he is, he doesn't always package it well.
