William Hooper Councill, educator and race leader, was born into slavery in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on July 12, 1849. His parents were both slaves on the Councill plantation. When William was five, his father escaped to Canada and tried unsuccessfully to obtain freedom for his family. In 1857, William, his mother, and his brother, Cicero, were sold at the Richmond slave market to a trader, who in turn sold them on to a planter in Alabama. In 1875, the Alabama legislature appointed 26 year old Councill as the first principal of the State Colored Normal School at Huntsville, which is now known as Alabama A&M University. The school opened on May 1, 1875 with an appropriation of $1,000 in the basement of a Huntsville church. The Colored Normal School would train black teachers to work in Alabama's segregated school system. By the mid 1880s, it rivaled Tuskegee Institute in central Alabama as vocational-industrial training facility.
All I know is I fukk with The Education of Black People by Dubois. He believed that the talented tenth of blacks need to pull the rest up, which is still true.

Yeah, Im aware of him but the thing is, Tuskegee is more known.
naaaaaaaaaaaw, that was W.E. B Dubois... this dude refused to hire darker skinned blacks at the NAACP, preferred lighter skinned blacks.I may be thinking about a different dude but ain't that the cat that had beef wit Garvey? If so![]()
The funny thing...
A lot of educated black folk won't help other black people that offer them no benefit. But they're quick to label themselves as a part of the "talented tenth" without even understanding what that means.![]()
