He did everything he could to try and push me away when we were in a relationship because really he was just afraid that I was just trying him on and was going to leave him eventually anyway.

flip this situation to your ex being a female and this is point blank exactly my last relationship except the getting drunk part. Dealing with someone with insecurities and trust issues can be very taxing and stressful when all you want to do is show them you are with them because you want to be with them...
