Why aren’t white people called European Americans?

Cause they know what country they come from. They call themselves Italian, Polish, Irish, etc. and if they go back to colonial roots they just called themselves "American". Most ados/fba families have been here since colonial times, should we drop the "African"

Always wondered this.

They want a unified front as a whole nationally . But in small regional groups they will proudly proclaim which euro country is their origin (Irish, Italian, polish, etc)

Helps continue the "us vs them" mentality on a lot of topics.

When it gets down to it a lot of those European countries hate each other just like every other place on earth

Because many of them can trace their linage back to their country of orgin. The majority of white people came here within the last 150 years. African American is an ethnic name for black people who have been in American (and British Colonial America) since slavery. The name could have been anything and it would mean the same thing. We're the overall majority of black people in the US, so we have a distinction. Before the 60s (or somewhere around that), it was much more common for white people to be called Irish, Italian, German, etc...

I was watching Andy Reid’s interview yesterday & I was just laughing that this fat man is definitely of Irish descent. His ginger hair & ‘Reid’ is an Irish name.
