Blu is way way way better than J.Cole (or at least was better around "Below the Heavens")
But they are similar.

I thought Blu formed a serious drug problem and that's why he fell off.

Blu is just ok. He's not that great like some of y'all say!
He doesn't have a very strong flow nor great voice.
People are so madly overrating him on this board.
And i like Blu but not on some GOAT shyt.

his lackluster output hasn't helped him. not necessarily the music itself but the average person doesn't want to hear poorly mixed, unmastered rough music. not because they are super audiophiles or anything but because the average person listens to the radio etc & they aren't used to that type of lo-fi music. personally i don't really like it either.

Cant speak on rumors dont know the man but he needs to release mastered music. Plus he cant seem to get a major cosign.

This. I really want to like his other stuff more, but between the awful mixes, goofy production choices (sometimes), and being all over the place, it's hard.

Below The Heavens is an amazing album. But also asking why he can't become mainstream in 2014 seems a little backwards. I'd almost ask how COULD he get mainstream now? It would be like someone like Nas blowing up now. I realize we have Kendrick, but there's only room for so many cats like that for the general public to accept, sadly. Kendrick also has the backing by Dre and a lot of melodic hooks, etc.

I'd love to see Blu do well. I enjoyed his last double album a lot actually. But I don't think he'll ever be a mainstream type of dude.
