It was an unwritten rule not to run for a 3rd term because Washington stepped down after his 2nd term ended (could have easily been president for life if he wanted to). FDR served 3 1/8 terms (if even that) and now they can't do it anymore. Truman made it law to prevent a potential monarchy from happening, although in FDR's defense it's not a good idea to have a different leader during times of intense conflict which was the case during FDR's 3rd and especially his 4th term. From my own knowledge Ulysses Grant and Teddy Roosevelt were the only other presidents that seeked a 3rd term, Teddy ran as a 3rd party and that ensured a democrat (Wilson) in office since most of his supporters also supported the Republican nominee William Taft.
Anyway, Obama would win if he was running a 3rd time. Trump/Clinton are way too polarizing to beat Obama even with fatigue being a knock against him.
