Why did the Mavs trade Kidd, Jackson and Mash?

I know Jason and Jim were beefing over Toni Braxton and they had to trade one of the two. But why did they end up trading both of them instead of rebuilding around one and Mash. And why did he end up getting traded? Was it because of injuries or something else? That could have been a damn good squad in the West if not for them being traded.
