Because today's rap game consisting of mostly strip club music and simping over strippers is so conscious
For every Kendrick/J Cole album there's like 50 other albums designed for strip clubs.
"Volume 2Volume 3 still sold more records than Will Smith" - Jay Z
Will Smith the rapper was kind of a punchline in those days. Go watch the Gettin Jiggy Wit It video. Plus the Eminem line was actually funny
Em wouldn't have made it if he came out in the early-mid 90's or if he came out today. For some reason we weren't as conscious during the late 90's/early 2000's.
this
I think the SJW element might even make him bigger tbh, the GLAAD shyt basically did just that & they were a non factor back then comparativly speaking. I don't think you can stop white people rallying behind Em at any point. That has nothing to do it, once he signed with Dre he was destined to blow up. Infinite was released in 96, Slim Shady EP in 97. Had he released SSLP a couple of years earlier he still would've 'made it'. maybe not the same way but he still would have been 'big' artist.
Now I agree he wouldn't 'make it' now or become as huge as he is. But not because of someone being "conscious", more so because of the current fake outrage culture & social media and people being offended by every possible thing just because. Social media has made fans even more fickle & phony people expose themselves all the time now.

he did...like 5 years after the fact

Because the beastie boys weren't overtly racist and just because Em is better lyrically doesn't make him more talented musically.Someone with Eminem's caliber of talent would make it any era of hip hop, stop with the bullshyt. The kid's discography is weak but his technical skills are up there with the greats, if the Beastie Boys made it in the 90's, then why wouldn't someone who was infinitely more talented than them also make it?
Will went back at him pretty hard, he's a grown man who's more succesful than Eminem - he doesn't really need people to "allow" someone to go at him.
Plus, as much as I love the Fresh Prince - his stance against cursing in his raps looks funny in the light considering he will say whatever he needs to in movies.
in their slander of eminem people would often cite will smith as an example of positive rap music.
sort of like how back in the day people would target richord pryor and eddie murphy and say things like "why can't they be more like cosby".
it was more of a diss to the critics he was making fun of, not will smith.
Will Smith went on a rant at an award show sayin he ain't gotta cuss to sell records or whatever. Eminem just responded to said rant.
Thats how I always took it. Believe it was the MTV Video/Music Awards
Which Royce supposedly wrote![]()
