Why didn't Luger win the title at Summerslam '93?

He was clearly being built up as the next Hogan with all the Lex Express stuff but then they have him win by a fukking countout against Yoko after the months of build up :what:

I mean....maybe Vince wasn't entirely convinced that Luger was popular enough to be given a run with the title but at least let him have the strap for a couple of months to see if he can gain some momentum. Worst case scenario is if it doesn't work, Yoko wins the belt back at Survivor Series.

People clown Lex being a flop but he wasn't exactly helped by the booking.

That two year run from him slamming Yoko on July 4 to him debuting on Nitro was some of the worst yoyo booking ever. That run truly fukked up how people look back on his career and even then somehow he was still over.

well supposedly he was going to main event and win the title at wrestlemania X, but there was also a push for bret hart. and creative settled it by who got the louder cheers when they were both announced as royal rumble winners

Not really an issue with how WM X was booked. Long term, Bret was the best option on damn near every measurable level.

My problem was July 93' till RR. He could have won the belt at Summerslam (rathet than the dumb finish) and held it till Survivor Series and dropped it in some dirty fashion.

This would have allowed them to STILL have the exact same RR finish with him at the "rightful" champ vs. Bret as the people's champ.

It just completely dropped his stock by them going back and forth with him.

When ppl say he wasn't over, it comes off as smart mark bullshyt out of the Meltzer handbook. He was popular enough to justify a title win. Wrestling in the states was declining rapidly and I also think the steroid investigation was in the back of McMahon's mind. Also, who was the second heel after Yoko? Shawn Michaels or Jerry Lawler and they both had their issues. I think he could do a lot more with Yoko as the champ than Luger.
