My guess is those two young ladies are excelling in school/athletics or whatever else they're doing and the city is recognizing them for it by crowning them Ms Juneteenth without much thought into their lineage.

I’ve heard situations where Africans have literally made fun of African Americans because they say we were slaves and they weren’t… so that makes us “Akata” and therefor weaker than them.

My observation has been that most black people I have interacted with (not only within my family) feel that Juneteenth is a holiday that is “forced” or a symbolic gesture.

Let’s keep in mind that it wasn’t even a national holiday until Biden got into office and that’s pretty much the only thing they’ve “done” for black people.

Personally I think it’s a nice tradition to celebrate and I’ll do so with people who want to, but I also understand why people may not be interested in doing so.

Since you are so passionate about the holiday find a way to monetize it and if you're not into the capitalism thing find a way to honor it by starting a pageant or Award ceremony of your own. Because the kids were presented with an opportunity to win something, however meaningless it is, they accepted it. They probably had no idea it would be such a highly charged award.
