Few years ago, explained this to my family about the cyclical nature of these yearly slave/ servant movies and the psychological torment it creates. To top it off, these movies have the nerve to win awards which then starts the process over for the following year.:wow:

So I have an honest question...

I understand how someone might be turned off by people being portrayed in a certain way in movies.
But how do you balance this...with the responsibility of telling history accurately in art?

Put in a much more dull way...

Why is it that if a movie about slavery is made, people are hyper critical because they feel it's a way to portray the worst images of black people?
And at the same time, I'm not sure that there's the same anger or reluctance when it comes to others? If another holocaust movie gets made, I don't get the sense that people are in arms about jews being portrayed at their worst moment yet again.

I'm not trying to compare suffering with suffering. I'm just asking why it seems like one instance is viewed as a kind of propaganda to keep their image down....and the other is viewed as just a historical account?

I agree with you and I understand that take, it's just not something I take pleasure in watching

Maybe it is a necessary evil, I think white people enjoy these movies

If anyone complains, it's usually someone black

The color purple takes place after slavery was abolished. It's not a slavery movie but it does cover subjects that are caused by the aftershock of slavery.

1.) Crab in the barrel mentality
2.) Colorism and featurism
3.) Sexism
4.) Black on Black violence
5.) Racism

It also covers
1.) Learning to let go
2.) Learning to love yourself
3.) Learning to stand up for yourself
4.) Black spirituality "the good" and "the bad"
5.) Coming together as a community

You think it's worth a watch for the positives?

If blacks in a movie before 1980, it must be a slave movie.

Why is the 80s the dividing point for everything.

Did Axl Foley free the slaves? @RickyGQ @NV-ME @Basaglia

Idk I never seen it

Didn't know there were any positive besides some white man getting cut or something lol
Just some advice. You don't have to see it to validate your Black card but if you see it you have seen a movie with a lot of significance to a wide variety of Black people you can express your opinion about whether it be negative or positive going forward. It gives you a chance to crap on it from a place of knowledge instead of ignorance at the very least and who knows you might actually end up liking it. There are more pros to seeing it than cons.

The black card thing was just in jest, but maybe I'll give it a try

Nikkas in here exposing themselves for not reading books by black authors in High School or College. If someone makes a movie of Gloria Naylor's Linden Hills, those movie tickets are as good as bought.

Alice Walker wrote that book with characters in the age range of her grandparents. For me that would be my great-grandparents. This forum is full of lames who label themselves black.

Most definitely. It has it's dark moments that will definitely make you uncomfortable, mad and sad. It also has it's uplifting moments that will make you laugh, cry happy tears and catch the holy ghost if you aren't careful.
