The DMV was wearing north face BEFORE nikkas knew that cacs chose it as winter wear...black folks were taking their cues late off of dc breh...not cacs.
North Face, Foams, etc...all DMV shyt...not white people shyt.
I've never heard of a 25-30 year long trend.
BIGGIE rapped about taking a bytch's northface away...20 years ago.
North Face had been out for a while so this may be true that it was popular among DMV brehs before it went mainstream. Where I’m from, we were wearing Patagonia in the 90’s and they have just recently gotten mass appeal as well. I don’t think it’s true to say though that brehs was copping their style from the DMV. I don’t think the DMV exports its black culture like that as opposed to, let say, Atlanta and how they exported long white tees or NYC and how they exported snapbacks, timbs, and coogi sweaters.
North Face, Patagonia, etc.... were appropriated by middle class blacks from upper middle class whites who were into hiking, mountain climbing, and skiing and who would mix in their active apparel with their casual or business causal clothing. Black people ain’t doing those activities like that and those brands are first and foremost active apparel brands not winter brands (there is even snark by many who blast folks for wearing these brands because it’s trendy and not for their utility, like wearing base layers and fleece and you don’t even mountain climb, ski, or any other outdoor activities).
Same with Ralph Lauren. Early 2000s RL gained mass appeal among black folks (not sure if it caught fire among hip hop brehs from Atlanta brehs) but we all know that it had been popular with nautical New England preps that summer for generations. I’m pretty sure RL was a staple among brehs from Boston just off of proximity.
You see it now with these Canada Goose down jackets that have became a status symbol among whites in the past 3 years and watch how they are now starting to gain mass appeal among blacks.
