I've suffered with this question long enough and I'll take the insults involved for not knowing the answer(I didn't play college ball), but I've got to ask for someone to break it down for me.
The scenario is usually the same:
The PG will bring the ball up the court. Ok, fine.
He'll pass it to the SG and go for a screen. Ok, fine.
The SG will use the screen and have ~4-5 feet of space between him and the defender who's coming to help out, and 1 of 2 things happen: He passes the ball into the paint, or -and this is what confuses me- pump fakes, drives, and passes the ball back out to the Guards who are in coverage.
They repeat this cycle up until the shot clock is down to 4-5 seconds and then somebody jacks up a long midrange J or a 3 that hits backrim or air balls.
I dont understand it. The NBA % would be insane if they letguards have that much room to shoot jumpers. Why pump fake and drive if you have all that space to take the shot, and then after the drive, pass it back out? What did you even drive to the paint for?
I asked my oldest brother about it and he said "They're scared to shoot because they don't want to miss", but im thinking they practice jumpshots in practice all the time, why would they be scared to take open shots?
Coli breh's drop some knowledge on me on this one, I know some of you had to play college ball.

Nobody wants to be the guy who takes a shot like 10 seconds into a possession (even if it's a good shot, which it almost always is) when your coach will lambast you for it and run your ass off in practice the next day.
