I've suffered with this question long enough and I'll take the insults involved for not knowing the answer(I didn't play college ball), but I've got to ask for someone to break it down for me.

The scenario is usually the same:

The PG will bring the ball up the court. Ok, fine.:ehh:
He'll pass it to the SG and go for a screen. Ok, fine.:ehh:

The SG will use the screen and have ~4-5 feet of space between him and the defender who's coming to help out, and 1 of 2 things happen: He passes the ball into the paint, or -and this is what confuses me- pump fakes, drives, and passes the ball back out to the Guards who are in coverage.:dwillhuh:

They repeat this cycle up until the shot clock is down to 4-5 seconds and then somebody jacks up a long midrange J or a 3 that hits backrim or air balls.

I dont understand it. The NBA % would be insane if they letguards have that much room to shoot jumpers. Why pump fake and drive if you have all that space to take the shot, and then after the drive, pass it back out? What did you even drive to the paint for?:mindblown:

I asked my oldest brother about it and he said "They're scared to shoot because they don't want to miss", but im thinking they practice jumpshots in practice all the time, why would they be scared to take open shots?:dahell:

Coli breh's drop some knowledge on me on this one, I know some of you had to play college ball.:ld:

35 seconds is a long time my breh, and coaches tend to misappropriate huge chunks of the shot clock with unnecessary off-ball action in some hard-headed attempt to "create mismatches" and/or "counter the opponent's athleticism" like this is WWII-era Princeton :dahell:

:manny:Nobody wants to be the guy who takes a shot like 10 seconds into a possession (even if it's a good shot, which it almost always is) when your coach will lambast you for it and run your ass off in practice the next day.

My little cousin plays rec ball I'm watching them turn him into a robot. Coaches are all about their sets and plays, he out there turning down shots not even looking at the rim!!

Long shot clock, less NBA-caliber one-on-one talent, coaching that emphasizes team ball, players that need more open space to knock down shots

theyre just trying to run time off that neverending shot clock they have

Shot clock too long

Would it matter if the shot clock was 60 seconds long if you're wide open for a shot and don't take it?

I guess it is a confidence/coaching issue.

Someone said it, but yeah, they have to run sets. The coach will bench a player for doing his own thing.

Most of the prolific NBA scorers were also reigned in during their college year(s). Very few 50 point games by college players.

Its good in a way. It teaches the game, patience, and discipline, in some cases.

Props for asking the question.
