You have your logic backwards.

Humans are obviously the most intelligent species, so maybe monogamy is a smart strategy?

More importantly, we're by far the most social species among mammals, and its not even close. No other species maintains the number of relationships (same-gender and cross-gender) or the degree of intensity (in terms of mental/emotional expenditure) in those relationships that humans do. Random fukking screws up that network in a way that more simple-minded mammals just don't have to deal with.

And "humans are the only mammals stupid enough to do it" is an urban legend anyway. It's not common, but there are dozens of other species that do monogamy too. Prairie voles, beavers, otters, wolves, foxes, coyotes, some antelope, some bats, gibbons, and about 15% of monkey species practice monogamy too.

The chances of cheating increases exponentially every day that man steps outside and sees a beautiful in shape woman. Not to mention if she's throwing it at him as well.
