It's not Nas's best album, but I think it was still very solid

"Life We Chose" and "Last Words" are right up there with my favorite post-Illmatic Nas songs

"Family", "Some of us Have Angels", "Project Windows", "Come Get Me", "Quiet N----s", ... all very good songs

The only real filler, IMO, was "You Owe Me" and "Big Girl" (and I even have a soft spot for "You Owe Me", but that's another story)

So why do people act like the album was complete garbage?

Aside from the two bad songs, the main faults I can find with it are some lackluster hooks, and perhaps a slight drop-off from the usual lyrical quality we got from Nas. But overall, I think it's a dope album worth checking out.

I never knew the answer to this. I always guessed it was because it was the popular thing to do.

Yeah, I don't know

I get the feeling that it had a lot to do with the way it was put out rather than the actual content:

- The corny album cover

- the fact that it was put out so soon after I Am (An album which people were complaining about, for some reason. The only way such a quick follow-up would
be well-received was if it was superior to I Am)

- It didn't feel like as much of an "event" as the release of a Nas album usually did. Not as much promotion, not as many high-profile guest appearances and producers, etc. No songs leaked beforehand that caused a lot of excitement (the way "Nas is Like" did for I Am and "Ether" did for Stillmatic)

- All of the bootleg unreleased songs from I Am that were floating around. No tracklisting was going to satisfy everyone, and the exclusion of unreleased tracks that people liked gave them more to complain about

Basically the hate comes from the singles. If he would've left a couple of songs off and had Come Get Me as the lead street single, then dropped God Love Us,Project Windows, and Family shyt would've been praised and went plat.

As a Nas Stan that album is every bit the 3.5 mics it got, which is under average for a Nas album.

1). It dropped after I Am which was pretty good but also criticized for not being the epic double album it was supposed to be

2). It was unfocused and didn't follow the album's theme. Every Nas album follows a general theme, for every stand out track such as Life We Chose and Last Words you had a mediocre track (Quiet nikkas) a pandering crossover track (Owe Me) and a :scusthov: Track (Big Girl) the overall feel of the album didn't fit the theme of Nas being any type of prophet of the Projects

Yeah it definitely felt rushed. Too soon after I AM and the inclusion of the crossover tracks didn't give it that NaS feel. Also being compared to his other works,it was under par. I definitely some gems on there, they just rushed and mishandled the project.
