Some people take it as passive aggressive way of saying “I’m better than you”

I think it's because someone who would say something like I'm not a trend follower is also probably thinks they're smarter than everyone and that they are more special and unique than everyone else.
Instead of saying you dont follow that particular thing you make it sound like you aren't a sheep.
You're letting people know you're an a$$hole and they are acting accordingly.
