I don't know, exactly. But as a species, I think we are not supposed to just stay with one partner for the rest of our lives. Outside of that, you can chalk it up to people just being immature. Why? Because a relationship requires a commitment, if you can't end that commitment by being upfront with the issues, you are immature if you think getting caught cheating is the way to do so. A lack of morals and wisdom is something commonly found in cheaters, whether they admit it or not.

People have someone they've chosen to be with because that situation works for them and their partner in a mutually beneficial way and they don't want to lose that person.
But familiarity can breed boredom or emptiness and people crave a new feeling that they can't get from their partner any longer and they have to scratch that itch. That's what selfish people do anyway.
The honorable thing to do is just suppress that urge out of devotion and loyalty to who you're with. But hey, people ain't always honorable all the time.
