Why Do People From Chicago Talk With A Country Accent?

I remember one breh on here said his pops told him chicago nikkas ain’t nothing but mississippi nikkas with winter coats on

A lot of them (most especially the ones from the West Side of Chicago) sound like they just got off a direct train from Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. They don’t sound as drawly as their Down South relatives but a lotta Chicago nikkas definitely got that country grammar whether they realize it or not.

Chicago in the 50s and 60s was the centre (and still is) of Blues music.
Genius bluesmem like Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker all started or perfected their craft there.

I never understood why, till I studied migration habits of black people in North America, they were playing country music for a country crowd that had migrated to Chicago in the 20s and after the war.

I don't understand it either. My high school football coach was country as hell. He was born and raised in Chicago, but that southern drawl was thick. Most Chicago people don't talk that way, though.

It's not that deep. Our people are from the South. My mom(granny moved up here in the 40s) was born up here but even my pops is from the South. It's too close to disappear completely.

I honestly don’t remember…I bought the cassingle for this and hardly even remember the song on the other side

this was the 2nd song on the shyt I had…plus it had the hay instrumental too…I think I might’ve seen/read a couple interviews but I don’t recall much about them to give you a fair answer

I mean I’m from Cincinnati and a lot of us have a bit of a southern accent same as I noticed with my parents from Indianapolis and even over to Kansas City and St. Louis …I never much thought about it but almost all of us border or have direct connection to northern migration consistently.
