Never really noticed this but, maybe it's because in the south it's always about acknowledging someone. Rather you walk into a room or pass someone in the hallway. I always feel like I'm being rude if I walk pass someone and don't make eye contact. I gauge rather or not to say "hello" by eye contact. So it may seem like starring but, it's really just trying to see if you're friendly or worth saying hello to.

You do know that the Mason Dixon line had nothing to do with what state is north or south, right? I'm from Baltimore and I think people in the DMV are a tad country, but they aren't southern; neither is Baltimore or Maryland for that matter.

No. The mason-dixon line isn't the cultural line, it was a property denotation line. The south starts under NoVA...around Richmond, VA is when "the real south" happens.
