jay-z is one of tha top off skill alone. overall hes probably a blueprint of what a rapper should follow if they are looking to be in the record BUSINESS. Any rapper who signs that contract is in the record BUSINESS.

The point of a business is to make money. One of tha ways you can do that is by appealing to the widest range of people as possible. stayin tha same wont do that so you gotta evolve. i never understand why rappers get criticized for it. its cool not liking the direction but to say they sold out or whatever is short sighted. they are a BUSINESS themselves that has to stay relelvant and make money.

He found the perfect medium in my opinion of stayin true to himself and being mainstream. if you listened to all his albums and actually listened to his lyrics without bias you'd realize he said he was gunna do everything hes doin now. specially on reasonable doubt. he told you his goals and how he was gunna do it and tha nikka did that shyt

jay-z my fav rapper but only three of jhis albums i really listen too. im not one to call all his albums classics but RD, BA and AG are personal classics to me. the rest i dont go back and listen to as much to be honest. i dont like everything he does but to me his skill is always there. the double entendres and metaphors are still there. not everyone is into our type or lyricism though and he has to take that into consideration. he dumbed down to double his dollars but hes in the record BUSINESS. you sign that contract you gotta cater. if you dont wanna sell out then give away your music for free and just rap in ciphers.

Young guru relax.

Sean John is still going strong.

50 cent, nelly and the game all had sneakers as well. Hell even birdman had his own shoe.

Jay is a very shytty business man with more fails than success, ever heard of the J hotels? Your talking about the Nets arena like he isnt a 1% shareholder. Do you know what that equals to in say so? Beat it. If your talking rapper then speak lyrics if not beat it

Jay was the first with a shoe, those other dont get a shoe with out Jay opening the door.

Diddy isnt a rapper.

How many other rappers own a part of a team? Are any other rappers doing this

Jay z said he was the first non athlete with a shoe deal, so i believe it:smugdraper:

The fact that Jay z doesnt make any decisions is not the point.

What other rapper is owns part of a team and is the face of the franchise.

He owns 1.5%, btw

Jay's top 5....I think threads like this though is why he gets as much hate as he does... grown as men having man crush's on these celebrities...like they never had a father figure in their lives.

Jay-Z is a liar though. He claims he invented holla. Claims he brought MTV to the hood. As if NWA, Death Row, Wu Tang didn't own MTV in the 90's.

He might own 1% but he's the one introducing the team, at every big meeting, has rocawear on the seats, is on the billboard, breaking ground at the arena, designing the logo and on. Jay has been running their marketing and been the face of the management.

And no one knows how much Jay-z owns, besides him being a minority owner. He might've copped 10% yesterday and you wouldn't know it.
Forbes estimated 1.5-4% btw.

Let's have this debate on the next Higher Learning podcast. There are many people on that podcast that could use some educating. I'd answer your question Crimson but it would take too much time and you're in Nas stan heaven which is the exact opposite of the real world where Jay-Z is highly regarded by people from the bottom to the top. The most hood to the most bourgie yuppie you will find. These guys just don't get it. You have to excuse the Booth. I can't get into because people who I respect otherwise say the dumbest or just plain ignorant things in regards to the guy and when they run into someone who can actually debate with them they get real quiet. It makes them feel better to believe Wacka Flocka and Jay-Z have the same fan base.

:rudy:

You salty because Nas is getting too much love on the podcast so you trying to recruit camel stans? :comeon:

Super lame.

I haven't listened to a single podcast since the second one in its entirety. I haven't heard any of the hip hop discussions. I was telling people to get on for two reason: (1) it'd get more listeners and (2) otherwise, if I got on there it'd be me arguing with a bunch of Nas stans and I'd be in the awkward position of spending a bunch of time bodying argument in support of a guy who was literally my introduction into what Hip Hop is. But it's reached a point where the Nas stannery has reached unforeseen heights and you guys just have a giant circle jerk. There's no point in that.

I have always maintained that 2Pac, Nas and Jay-Z are my 3 favorite rappers of all time and the 3 best ever. I just indulge myself in the extremes that the rest of you do. Someone can dislike Jay-Z while acknowledging his greatness and someone can dislike Nas while understanding the same. It's only on here that you guys are incapable of that and that's because you truly don't understand either artist or their importance. You guys overstate Nas' importance and underrate Jay-Z's where the latter has a larger and more diverse core fan base in the real world. It makes you comfortable to pretend that Jay-Z and Wacka Flocka has the same fan base or something. Think about this, the most educated people I know love Jay-Z, and so do many of the most sincere. You guys truly believe that you see something that they ALL can't? That's my point, you leave out a major portion of the discussion.

The fact that you actually think you or anyone else would be "bodying" anything in a subjective discussion about the aesthetics of music is laughable.

I don't know who you're talking about, but it's certainly not me. I like Jay-Z...he's probably somewhere between 5-7 in my all time top ten depending on what mood I'm in. I like most of his albums minus a couple and I called RD a classic back and Jay an elite emcee back when most people weren't. And I have never understated his importance or denied the extent of his fanbase.

But it's funny that you're talking about his "importance" and what the majority of people think about him as if those are the criteria by which you judge an emcees talent and work. You are blatantly committing an argument ad populum logical fallacy; exalting the idea of being a mindless lemming and casting aspersions on thinking independently and not falling in lockstep with the opinion of the masses.

Agreed...Jay's top 5 for me but his stans are annoying as hell. Dunno y but Jay stans annoy me the most for some reason. Maybe its because they act like he never put out anything sub par even tho he put out more weak albums then any other top 10 rapper easily. Or that they always bring up his $ and business skills even tho it doesn't have shyt to do with rap
