Without Kobe coming of age, Shaq would've still been ringless like he was when he got to LA and was up until Kobe became the starter and played his 1st full 82 game season in the starting lineup. Shaq won NO rings with Penny, even though they made the Finals and he doesnt make it thru the Western Conference Playoffs without Kobe leading the way in most of those series'. It was stated back then that the WCF was the "REAL NBA Finals"....and Kobe was usually the one dominating it. Yes, the 2000 Lakers win was Shaq being the major piece no doubt, but 2001 and 2002, was Kobe showing out during the playoff run up until the Finals were they allowed Shaq to go to work on the weak East big men.

The West was known for bigs and the east was known for guards. Lets not sit here and act like there were elite SGs in the West. Stop it!!!!!! Portland had Steve Smith gaurding him, Doug Christie in SAC, and Bruce Bowen in san antonio, and once Bowen got his D right. They were clearly inferior to Iverson and reggie miller, who they had to play in the finals. I will give you the 2001 WCF when Kobe went off against the Spurs.

Shaq didnt leave the Lakers because of Kobe either...he wanted to be paid more than the Honorable Dr. Buss would give him and we traded him. It never came down to Shaq saying he didnt wanna play with Kobe and it was either "him or me" like you are implying. Why try to revise history?
