I've been watching a bunch of documentaries on rap scenes worldwide and one thing all these places have in common--from europe to east asia--is the influence g-funk/west coast style rap has had on their style.what was it about 90's west coast rap that made it palatable to different cultures worldwide? I mean even within America, the Southern hip hop scene was very influenced by the west. I mean even Chicago drill shyt heavuily draws from west coast gangsta rap.

what was it about the west coast that is so influential on global rap movements? and why hasn't east coast hip hop (as revered as it is among hip hop heads) had that same effect? :ohhh:

West coast rap was some of the first hip hop people saw worldwide in the 90's because by the time hip hop started getting on television/airwaves the west coast was dominating. regardless given access over time East Coast hip hop dominated internationally. Outside of snoop it's mostly NY artists rocking abroad for many years. Now the yong dudes like more souther rap and drill but for many years it was a major east coast bias around the world.

Just a wild guess. I’m no musicologist or global rap expert.

However, I think that the overtly electronic and party ready sound of West Coast music is what attracts people. The East Coast music by contrast sounds drearier, darker and more acoustic by comparison. East Coast and West Coasts sounds are both versatile in my opinion but West Coast music is more accessible.

The same thing exists in rock music. West coast punk rock is more popular cuz it’s brighter music with more going on production wise. East coast shyt is dark and abrasive in contrast and only fits certain moods.

It was thrown in jerry heller's lap.

To make it so it elevated.
The previous white boi deviance marketing of that misappropriated white washed blues.
To undermine hiphop culture.

Thus making it so.

IDK about that....I think East Coast rappers are actually more popular outside the USA than West Coast ones but Gangsta Rap via West Coast is the more influential substyle.

this

Buildin up from what this nikka just said, look at cut clear examples:

Now compare it to

Both classic songs for us hip hop heads, Rakim the og GOAT rapper, Dre GOAT producer

But for a non-hip hop fan its so easy to see which track would be more digestable and easy to listen to

There's a reason why westcoast g funk rappers were the first ones to go multi platinum on the regular... they sound much more friendly to non hardcore fans

.....

Same reason why 20 years later, the south took over hip hop... While east coast rappers was tryina outdo each other on the lyrical tip, south nikkaz focused on party music n started outsellin ny rappers

Im from NY n a purist at heart when it comes to hip hop... but we often forget: rap is not a sport, its not about bein the nicest, its just music n most people wanna relax n enjoy music

This is shyt and a terrible troll job.

Youtube is filled right now with a bunch of white europeans who are on that boom bap lofi vibe.

In fact lofi has it's root in boom bap and lofi is widely popular these days. I see more europeans on that lofi/boom bap type of wave than west coast style

The guys who Maschine/Roland,AKAI be getting to showcase their instruments always be some European cac who does lofi music

That boom bap style reigns Supreme in Europe

:ehh:

True europeans sure do love their electronic music..

They heard the Chicago House music through bootlegs and by 1989 they were running the house genre.
