IDK about that....I think East Coast rappers are actually more popular outside the USA than West Coast ones but Gangsta Rap via West Coast is the more influential substyle.

100% agree on this. Older east coast hip hop groups tour way more European festivals than west coast g funk artists of the same era.

You are right that worldwide gangsta rap is the most recognized sub-genre, although east coast rappers did gain a lot of success worldwide.
I can think about multiple reasons, some of them were already mentioned in this thread:
1 - Party/Dance music
2 - Dre's amazing production
But also:
3 - Gangsta is more exaggerated and draws more attention
4 - West coast influence via Hollywood
5 - Tupac is the biggest rap icon worldwide...
