Traditionally/stereotypically, boys end up becoming thugs whereas girls go into prostitution for the lack of better opportunities -- and I think boys fit better into a system that's already been established when they join gangs and such. And of course some of them (especially immature teenagers) are going to associate getting kills with manliness, with being a real gangster... but it's a deeper issue than that. Not nearly as many men would go as far as killing people left and right just to prove how manly they are, if there weren't other socioeconomic motivators.
