Why does gta do the open world sandbox genre so much better than everyone else?

They have extreme attention to detail and their directors prioritize worldbuilding above everything else.

Consistently massive budgets and long development cycles don't hurt either.

Yeah the world building is a distant first above anyone else. It's the best way too. In other games you'll notice the lack of detail, the sparse feel, the poor design. Take Saints Row, the city is much smaller, empty, and cookie cut. GTA does it right. You'll never notice all the little details because they make up the environment you seem to pass through and ignore. It feels normal to pass it all by just driving through. The best details are the ones that don't stand out until you look yourself. But when you do, you can appreciate the details that went into it.

Not really

Witcher 3 and Assassins Creed Origins maps are a lot bigger with tons of detail...

Also I felt New Bordeaux (Mafia III) was a lot more livelier than Los Santos...They did a great job with that map and captured the 60's New Orleans atmosphere well...If it wasn't for the repetitive mission structure that game could of been special...

I don’t know I think Watch Dogs 2 even though smaller was wayyy better than GTA V and IV. The game had limited features but imagine if Ubi gave it Rockstar budget

GTA V world was so dead and no livable it was probably the worst of the GTAs.

I see what u mean but nahhhhhh man lol

Witcher is mainly land , that’s not really that hard to develop compared to a city with buildings and etc

And why are they’re open worlds so successful?

Because money and long game development
It’s really no magic too it
