Why does it seem like almost every action movie is grossing 1billion dollars now?

I remember back when 'Titanic' was the first and only movie to gross that much and no other movie came close. But in recent years it seems like thats almost the norm now.

to add to the list of reasons, the importance of international markets is increasing. they are getting more disposable income, and since action movies dont need much context, these are the movies a wider portion of the global population can enjoy, so they are the best bet for studio cash.

talking head movies need nuance, and may contain controversial themes that keep them from being shown at all in some countries. movies about supermen destroying aliens cant really offend many, and can entertain almost anybody. it's the same way with comedies to a lesser extent.

A couple of posts have covered it. Movies are being developed specifically for 3D/IMAX, making those more expensive tickets worth it. Also, international markets matter more because movies are being developed with international markets in mind (internationally attractive actors/locales are featured a little more prominently).

Basically, successful studios are going the exact opposite direction of the music studios, and have learned how to make people pay for their product.
