We like other species are very violent by nature, it's not so long ago warfare was done by swords and not so long before than we were living in the wilderness getting hunted by other animals. We at this point in human history, contrary to what the news will have you believe are living in our most peaceful time.

Perhaps.. embedded in our DNA is the will to survive. And to survive is to neutralize all threats in sight. And that extends to entertainment. A part of our brain recognizes that and releases endorphins correspondingly.

Idk honestly. I'm a very peaceful and loving dude but I'm so entertained by fights and brawls on YouTube and by mma and I'm obsessed with medieval and ancient warfare. I play shogun Total war at least for an hour everyday because I'm so obsessed with watching sword fighting and dudes shooting blankets of arrows at each other.

basically this. less than 300 years ago we were going at each other with sharpened metal. Consider how old the human species. I just had this conversation with my son yesterday. In the last 100 years the amount of progress towards civility that we've made vs our entire history is staggering. Its like for the last several thousand years we've been slowly walking towards peace and then within the last 100 years we've literally taken massive leaps.

Let's just hope it's not one of those 2 step forwards 3 step backs thing.

at yall talking about we're making progress towards peace. We don't need much to get violent. All we need is the proper triggers. There have been studies that say the reaction violence induces from the brain is unique. So while law and order have made us less barbaric, the species still enjoy violent entertainment.

violence illicits a visceral emotional response. It's an adrenaline rush. In the coliseum days, life was short and barbaric, it's not surprising those people enjoyed watching others die. We've become much more civil, MMA is safer than football. I like MMA because it's two professionals going toe to toe, and the referee is there to stop the fight to protect a fighter. I think we value life more than we did back then because death was such a common occurrence.

We don't actually know this. Our genetic nature was formed 6 million to 100,000 years ago, well before recorded history. The period of time of recorded human history has had no role in forming our genetic nature, so to note that human history has been fraught with violence doesn't say much of anything with respect to what our "nature" is. Whether or not the conditions for survival 6 million to 100,000 years ago were conducive to a aggressive, violent nature or a cooperative nature is very much an open question. This doesn't mean that human history hasn't shaped our culture, attitudes and institutions, because it has in major ways. The point is that our recorded history doesn't provide enough information to make definitive statements about what human "nature" actually is.
