I'm not from the south but my guess is when rap was at it's height you really only had the east and the west coast as far as mainstream. They heard both and related to the west more.

Because Cali is full of southern transplants who went there in the 50's and 60's looking for jobs. Cali is the south, just a couple of generations removed, so they are closer culturally. That's why they talk like a cross between country nikkas and surfer whiteboys.

most people from Cali grandpas and grandmas is from the south and got a lot of aunties,uncles & cousins in the south.Cali used to be part of Mexico thats why Mexicans run it.
