why doesn't MC Lyte get her respect for being an elite emcee ?

I hear you, but even tho they've been more active, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS 1, Kool G Rap get their props as lyrical rappers

u hear me breh

but I do understand staying current and relevant

but her legacy and contribution to rap is criminally underrated
Ok well look at it this way.

All those rappers you just named? They're before my time but I can still describe their contributions to the game. What is Lyte's?

Even still Kool G created a whole sub genre of rap but is he even more popular than Lyte? I wouldn't think so

It's also very likely that Lyte just ain't that impactful. It happens:manny:

This is the reason I juxtaposed activity and impact in the first place. Wu Tang for example, doesn't have to keep making new music, but they do. They still get millions of listens of their old shyt. Few people have that luxury

fair enough breh

Yeah Lyte is more known than Kool G Rap, but the flipside is she was pigeonholed into a female rapper instead of just a rapper

If MC Lyte were a man she would get more credit for her bars in her prime

Lauren Hill isn't really a great rapper. She's got ok flow but most of her actual rapping is meh.

Lil Kim, Nikki, Mc Lyte, Shawna from DTP are the the top to me.

Edit: and yes Foxy Brown is up there.
I Shot Ya remix :ohlawd:

That's not even up for debate. Whether you witnessed her run in real time or not, there's just certain sh*t you should know.

breh, unlike most Coli-posters I don't pretend to know everything

what does that even mean "certain shyt" I "should know"

Keep it civil dog

I already asked about if she ever had a battle, but again most Coli posters are too prideful to ask questions, I'm not

I can't help my age, I'm familiar with 80s rap but I grew up on 90s rap and 2000s rap

it is what it is

Above the fray.
Thanks for than info on her battle

I wish some more mainstream rapper of her time would've tried to diss her, I think MC Lytes's style was tailor made for battle rap

I like all types of rap, but I'm partial to battle rap and lyrical rap with creative metaphors, punchlines, similes, analogies, wordplay, and uniqueness
You're welcome

(cued) Lil Kim paid homage in her verse on Quiet Storm, which was also battle rap

She didn't get flowers while active.

Song came out, no buzz

That song was actually pretty heavy in rotation back in the late 90s, remember it well.... That was a mini comeback for her and one of the hottest rappers at the moment being Missy on the song didn't hurt at the time.

That was her last hit though.

"Cold Rock a Party" is the lead single released from American rapper MC Lyte's fifth studio album, Bad As I Wanna B (1996). While the original version of the song that appears on the album was produced by Rashad Smith and samples Audio Two's "Top Billin", the single version features Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, was produced by Sean Combs, and samples Diana Ross' 1980 hit "Upside Down".[1] It was released in November 1996 by East West Records.

The song became MC Lyte's second-highest-charting single in the United States (after her previous single "Keep On, Keepin' On"), peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling over 600,000 units by the end of 1997.

Even in her heyday she wasnt a pop icon the way the way queen Latifah was. Queen had movies, shows, music so her stardom transitioned while Lyte was mostly an 80’s/early 90’s rapper who popped back up as an award MC in the 00’s.
