I don't understand why they let Korea be poor. Those 3 are the counterweight to the S.korea, Japan, and America coalition we saw a few days ago. The 2 former communist states are more than capable of setting up gazprom or Tencent offices within North Korea to stimulate their laggard cousin. I doubt china or Russia care about western sanctions because they are already being sanctioned so I doubt that is a hindrance.

It seems silly to have such a useless ally. Russia and china allowing North Korea to be poor , would be like Japan and America drafting a failed nation like laos or Myanmar into their orbit to combat china/russia .

even in a military conflict, a nation with an industrial base (like the southern Korea) would be able to actually aid the military efforts of the other two . Russia learned this the hard way when they could only get a meager supply of weaponry from NK to aid their Ukraine conflict, while an industrial Iran is cranking out drones and ammunition like it's nothing.

And yes, I understand the need for China to have a puppet nation as a shield against nearby western aligned nations. But a more robust puppet made of steel is a better shield for china than the flimsy cloth puppet that is north Korea.

Let’s narrow things down. China only became a big dog in the last 25 years. Before then it was economically/militarily closer to North Korea.

In the early growth years, China wasn’t as antagonistic to the West. It got Hong Kong back, economic ties in manufacturing. It wasn’t going to mess that up by giving Korea weapons. Plus, holding negotiations with Korea and America made it useful on the world peace stage.

So it’s really only in the last 10-15 it became “China” with ambitions of dominating. Creating another powerhouse doesn’t serve its interests

Same with Russia. It only stabilized under Putin in the last 15 years. It doesn’t gain anything creating another strong economic force in Asia.

No such thing as strong puppet states. There are strong men running them. Opportunities give people ambition

They probably don't even care about NK. They're just "allies" because NK is ostracized by the West and China and Russia have old bonds dating back to the Cold War and stuff. And they're too far behind to catch SK so why bother. That whole area is more-less set in terms of alliances etc, NK doesnt change shyt. Plus both countries got their own less advanced regions to uplift anyway.

China aint doing shyt because Kim actively wants his country to be poor and weak, that's the only way he can hold on to power. There's no obvious return on investment for China, compared to investing in resource-rich developing nations in Africa / Central America like they're doing now. If China wants to actually have an economically powerful NK, the only way to do so is to change the regime and overthrow Kim. That's way too risky with US military presence in SK, and also if they overthrow Kim they'll have a huge refugee crisis with millions of north koreans coming into their country which they def don't want.

Overall the status quo is ideal for China, just using NK as a buffer state so US military bases aren't right at their border. They don't give a fukk that NK is in shambles.
