Why don’t more people serve in the military?

Mistrust, perceived culture, perceived danger, etc. It’s a big commitment but you forget it after a while. It’s probably the easiest job I’ve ever had. My dad was in back in his day and scared me with all kinds of horror stories about racists and abuse.

it’s not as overt as back then and I didn’t see much of a difference vs working a civilian job. The only “abuse” I got was a black drill sergeant knocking my eye protection off my face with a range paddle while I was shooting. He over reacted and we had a little moment but that was it. The rest of my time, outside of actual combat, was mostly sitting around somewhere waiting to do something or go home.

I understand people’s disdain for joining because I was the same way. It all boiled down to not really knowing shyt outside of word of mouth, over dramatized TV, and getting a fraction of stories from the news. It’s a microcosm of the same life you’ll experience outside of it. Just mash whatever job you have with the culture of a high school football team (combat arms) or a high school basketball team (support units) and that’s how you’ll live. If I had to do PT in the morning and had the freedom to argue with, and cuss out my supervisor without the fear of being fired then I would probably feel like I’m in the Army again lol.

Look here. I come from multigenerational military. My pops was in the Air Force, my grandaddy was in the Army, all the uncles that marries my aunties are military, etc.

Not a NANN one of us in my generation joined, and it will always speak volumes to me. Particularly cuz of my own path.... Some recruiters came to my school and asked me to join and I told my pops thinking he'd be proud. I've told this story on more than one occasion here, it seemed like what we do as a family.

He BEAT MY ASS :damn: verbally that is :whoa: So I took the message and I'm thankful for it. Since then I've realized... the military... veterans.... the benefits, all that shyt??? It's a con

There's a whole recruitment program encouraging US to sacrifice our bodies, times, and lives for a country that's never accepted us. We go to war and come home (Lord willing) to the same damn bullshyt.... and yet THESE DAYS (cuz I'm in my bag tonight) the primary enemy that a certain sect see as robbing us of our justice claim are bLaCk iMmIgRaNtS :dead: As if we haven't deposited generations and lives into protecting a country that plundered THEIR ancestors and more. I swear :hhh:

I’m in the guard. I know it’s not seen as hardcore but my armory hosted a homeless shelter and I got paid $210 a day to volunteer and help out. Not a bad way to earn extra cash
Yeah but EVERY military thread is a shyt on nikkas in the military thread

I don’t take it personally that people look at it a certain way. (I know I was being a bytch in another thread and let some key words get to me and I was wrong for even responding to someone’s personal take on that kind of shyt). I encourage my younger family to do whatever they want to do outside of it first (college/trade) but if they want to join then I’ll support the fukk out of em either way.

some of the brightest, versatile, interesting people I’ve met were in the Army. I’ve met some shytty people there too. I had a lot of negative shyt going on before I joined. I have lots of veterans on both sides of my family that encouraged me not to. They were proud of me either way. It’s nothing to get in finish a contract and take that momentum outside. In the big scheme of things it’s not that big a deal. You join and/or do something else.

Most people that join the military never see combat.
I think about this sometimes.

Like when I'm at an airport and I see some old white guy and his kids salute some traveling soldier and say "Thank you for your service" like the guy did 3 tours in Iraq when he probably fixes the jeeps at Fayetteville...

a lot jobs can’t be the Quarterback positions. Somebody has to do the jobs nobody else wants to do.
