Yeah, but the Magic were severely banged up and injured in ‘96 for the ECF (Grant, Anderson, Shaw, Koncak). Shaq and Penny were dolo.
And Jordan’s ‘96 Finals weren’t that good and he could have arguably lost the series if Payton was on him from jump.
Actually in the 96 finals folks questioned coach karl for not doubling MJ as he had other star players. He finally put payton on him in either games 3 or 4 and began to run doubles at him especially when he got in the post to post up.
Folks forget one of the reasons that the sonics team gave hakeem and the rockets hell was because they played swarming defense and doubled a lot but had the speed and quickness to get back to shooters. Especially when they played ball
There issue was also shooters or not being able to shoot/get cold.....which was the reasons they lost to mutumbo's denver team. And had earlier loses in the first round when kemp and payton were young (which was a reason kemp and especially payton improved their mid range jumpers).
I remember when payton was a youngster and teams wouldn't even guard him when he was taking mid range jumpers. Thankfully he improved on that which culminated in the 60 plus win team in 1994. But sadly everyones jumper went cold against denver and having kendall Gill at SG guard (who was traded and the sonics got hersey hawkins during the offseason) did not help because he was not good at stretching the defense from 3 point range.
