I'm talking about dudes back in the day who blasted music from radios and CDs and cassettes.

Of course the streets built NaS up.

That was the 90s and the Internet wasnt popular then.

:why:

what does that have to do with anything?
You saying that the internet didnt build NaS up.

How you expect the internet to build anything up when it was new and irrevelant back then. :camby:

Actually no you did:

didnt know that. i'll take that L. no problem.

point stands tho. you disrespected the streets, but the street built nas up - which kills whatever point you were trying to make about that.

Nas used both the streets and the conscious crowd.

Jay on the other hand used mainly the streets for his come up.

Cats are not considering that up until about 99/2000 rap wasn't getting play on pop stations like that. You had one or 2 every now and then (usually songs white people ran into the ground already) or a Rap/R&B Collaboration but not just straight rap. Even now its not really straight up rap on pop stations, thats Pop music it just so happens to have rappers.

You had Gangsta's Paradise, Crossroads, then Mo' Money Mo Problems....as far as singles when for a long time that the shyt that made it. We all know Diddy was the king of self-promotion. And Paradise was on the Dangerous Minds soundtrack, with Michelle Pfeiffer in the video...which was a thing back then.

So really you had one rap song in the golden era of rap, the 90's, really be a super #1 hit on its own merits. No promo, no movie, no executive producer....all in the video...just a good ass song.

Nas never "made it mainstream" to you young nikkas because you don't understand the context of what mainstream is anymore. If you got major, national radio play, you were mainstream. If you had videos on MTV (TRL to be exact) you were mainstream. Both of which Nas did. But most of all ya'll dont know what Jay vs Nas did to MUSIC...not just hip hop...ALL MUSIC.

The last major beef between major artists got nikkas killed so everyone was reluctant, but then them two go at it....fam....the American music world damn near STOPPED. MTV had a TV SPECIAL on this shyt where Jay and Nas sat down with Sway and explained all this shyt. Jay went on Hot 97 crying and shyt talking about "it was foul and vulgar" the shyt Nas said....

Mainstream aint got shyt to do with the subject matter. For a few years Nas was about as mainstream as it got fam. Movies, videos, collabos all that shyt...

this topic is silly.

At what cost?

Now we got conscious cats barely eating in the mainstream like they did back in the day.

conscious rappers arent jammin like they did back in the day either.

Neither is the material rappers.

It all sounds like mixtape rap.

Most of the conscious rappers that was jammin got cut off anyway when the mainstream scene decided to focus only on certain topics.

The mainstream means 'majority'..Nas doesnt appeal to a majority of Americans who are infact cacs like a pop star.. His serious Black issues subject matter and demeanor makes it impossible for the average Top 40 cac to fukk with him.
