Outside of a paper I saw referring to Canada, with caribbean rates at 60 (male) and 49% respectively - drastically eclipsing any African American IR marriage.

Here's my hypothesis: the reason there is a marked difference in the rates at which black women and men marry out is because black men buy into white supremacy at higher rates than black women and therefore value white women as more feminine, prettier, and generally better (in accordance with white supremacy).

Why?

I'd argue that sexism provides black men with with a smidgen of power... just enough so that can be deluded into buying into this white supremacist system. If they just make enough money, they too can participate. Black women are (by and large) under no such illusion. We understand, by virtue of our position in the social hierarchy, that the only way is to dismantle the system totally and that buying in gets us nowhere. Colorism plays a part as well. Dark skinned black women understand the above concept far more than lighter skinned black women.

As I said, just a hypothesis.

I never thought about it like that but lots of black guys are color struck. But I also think lots of dudes who don't get play from sista's are forced to date interracially.

Completely delusional. This kind of rhetoric, which is often pushed by black feminists, is divorced from sociopolitical reality.
Contemporary mainstream black women's politics is completely centered around having a seat at the table, representation at any cost, desirability, dating/marrying out, decentering black men's/ boys issues and concerns etc.
Non black men's views on marrying BW is clearly one of the most critical factors to why the rates are different. The interest from BW is definitely there. p*ssy foot around it all you want but it is what it is.

I agree with some of the stuff in this post, but black male degree holders are in last place (tied with Hispanics) for income and only 6 percent of black male college students are in stem.

The data doesn’t support the “other women are targeting black men for earning potential” nearly enough to explain black men in college marrying out 2.5 times as often as black women.

Add in police oppression, multi-generational PTSD, multi-generational family health problems, individualist mantras, and any halfway sane person will seek refuge away from all of it. Even if they end up going from frying pan into Chernobyl. The idea that any activity/movement means progress is a common human failing being taken advantage of in this case.


It's not necessarily the best of the best we're talking about here. Caitlyn from round-the-way Indiana has dreams too. STEM or not, athletes at every level or not, the main thing is that these women are putting in the time to get what they want. That clip from Atlanta comes to mind. True i'm really just spitballing ideas. Your point about autonomy also gives me another thought.
Because of our historical lack of autonomy might Black people's interracial dating patterns just be consequential.

White people are the gatekeepers of interracial relationships(hell relationships in general if you wanna be technical) so the disparity between black men and black women's rates are really about how white people are feeling about us during a particular stretch of time. My point being that theres really no insight to be gained looking at black people's interracial dating patterns. The numbers would balance themselves as soon as white men decided marrying black women was en vogue. The assumption or insinuation that one group desires white partnership more than the other based on those numbers is a fallacy because of that historical lack of autonomy.
