"We knew he was strong," Lyles says, "but when he started pushing that kind of weight, I was like 'This guy is just a freak."

This is the thing - a lot of sports fans don't realize how high the talent/ability elevator goes up in sports. There are dudes who have no chance in hell of making it to the NBA who will go to a YMCA and run through nikkas. Consider that a large percentage of the guys who make it to the NBA are one of the top three in their state, provided it is not a talent heavy state. Do you know how cold you have to be at hooping to be ranked as one of the very best in your entire state? I don't care if you're from Vermont, frankly. It takes a tremendous amount of ability to be considered a top three player in an entire state, and I don't feel the average person can fully comprehend how good of a player that is.

Once you get to college, consider that there are standout performers who don't even get invited to workout for the draft. Only a very small percentage of HS players play college, and only 1 to 2 percent of college guys get drafted into the NBA. The trimming of talent as you ascend towards the pros is, statistically, almost impossible to get around.

Then you make it to the NBA, and you're surrounded by guys who've made it through the SUPER CUTS of going from HS to college, and college to the NBA. Literally thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dudes didn't make it.

Now, consider a motherfukker who, among these people who beat some ridiculous odds, are considered an All-Star? A league of rare talents, and you're, as an All-Star, at the top of that group.

You best believe there has to be something freakish about you to stand out among those types of dudes. Something set you apart from the all of these COLD ass ballers in the world. I bet most dudes from even small cities got a story or two about a local hoops start who beasted up in his area, who didn't make it, or if he did, he ain't anything special. You're comparing these dudes to guys who are all-time genetic freak athletes. Of course they're not going to look special when you have guys in the league, who may not even have a athlete to be compared to in the history of the sport.

Because most white dads won't even put their kids in basketball. If they're middle class it's baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer, and basketball last at least out in the east coast.

I think it is because when white men are growing up they watch television and all they see are black NBA players with no white NBA players so when those young white boys actually get on the basketball court they don't believe they can be great basketball players because all they have seen are great black NBA players and I believe you arguably need to believe you can be a great basketball player to become a great basketball player.
So basically the television brain washes white men into thinking they can't be great basketball players is my theory.
