I tend to defend NYC but it’s definitely connected to broadway culture of the wealthy. They hold broadway shows up as an artform and that same mindset was used regarding late night talk shows. It was treated as entertainment for the high educated/wealthy. The podcast mentioned are not the same, a lot rawer, and more modern. Just like SNL makes a shyt ton of corny, unfunny skits but the show as a whole is treated like some sort of high art prestigious comedy.
and therein lies the problem with American tastes.
It's harder now than ever to try to make America laugh, agree or co-sign anything, so you might as well go to a podcast that seemingly caters primarily to you.
And just like late night shows, you have to make a choice on who you wanted since the major ones aired against each other mostly.
Oddly enough, I don't listen to most of the popular podcasts that would fit the description because I don't have the time. I did a mini spreadsheet of the shows/pods/music I consume to see what I can cut out or where I have time to do other shyt. Nowadays, pods dominate that time more than TV. My late night show is basically the CBS fantasy baseball today pod.
Only thing that seemingly hasn't gone out of style are game shows. Once we're done with the Jeopardy's, Wheel of Fortune's The Price is Right, might as well dead linear TV altogether.
I think Desus and Mero could have pulled this off too but they left Vice for Showtime and the weekly format didnt fit their off the top of the head humor. Dont even get me started on the fact they split up.
Victory Light has been good enough to where I can listen to them and be just fine. Mero really helped Mamdani out with his campaign through his pod.
