T Pain did that because he felt singing like that had too much of a serious tone to it. He would manipulate his melodies to get that exaggerated effect from the hardware unit..

Epiphany was an underrated album, as was Rappa Turnt Sanga. T-pain is singlehandedly responsible for the modern musical landscape of Hip-Hop & R&B.

His use of autotune is the reason Kanye and Lil Wayne overdosed on it and lead to it becoming an integral part of music. This isn't dismissing Zapp, Roger, and even the Funkadelic movement, just an acknowledgement.

He will never get his due as a musical genius.

It's his signature effect, even though he, like Hendrix, is great at his instrument without it. shyt, I remember people calling autotune the "T-Pain effect" for a minute. Also for posting tiny desk.
