Why is anime so popular?

My old heads remember when anime was apart of American cartoon programming-
Voltron
Robotech
Thunderbirds 2086
G-Force
Mobile Suit Gundam
Star Blazers
etc

I didnt get hip tp DBZ until like 96'

So anime has always been apart of my life like hip hop, and someone else mentioned kung fu flicks....oh and porn..

The same reason that anything fantasy based is popular. People want to sit back and enjoy something entertaining and enjoy it. Super Heroes, Game of Thrones, Star Wars etc... all attract some of the same type of people.

For people that aren't ignorant and retarded to write it off as being stupid or gay there's action, mystery, horror, comedy, drama all types of genres for people to get into.

as someone that has never gotten into anime, im interested in knowing why dragon ball z, naruto etc are so popular?

to be clear im not asking in a negative/hatin way, im genuinely curious

and yes, i've seen a bit of these shows , but i guess not enough to figure it out
