People be like “it was underwhelming”…..no, nikkas was just expecting too much from it. It’s like people thought it would be some ground-breaking track that changed rap music. THAT was what was unrealistic.
Because of that sensibility, the song was pretty much ignored after the initial “WOW, Jay and Nas made a song!” wore off (well, that and today's rap fan has the attention span of a 3-year old).
Damn shame, too…..cause this song is EPIC. From the Godfather sample to the way the beat kicks in and they be like “UH!” in unison….not to mention the subject matter, which takes on the “hood tales” angle a bit differently…..
Cats need to stop underrating this song.

cause the 'fake' nas/jay-z collabo from the 90s was 100x better.....people were expecting more from the real thing

Song was dope. What's the point of these two getting along if we don't get a Dead Presidents 4 ft. Nas on a new Hov album, tho?

However it was still dope as fukk, people were just expecting it to be the greatest song ever.
Yeah, it was a mix of high expectations and Success coming out on its tail, and being doper. Also for some reason the beat for Black Republicans sounded like it was trying to be more epic than it actually was. It's not a bad beat or anything, and L.E.S. is dope, but I think their first collab should have either been more gritty, like Success was. Or if they wanted to go the big/epic route, they should've just finished this song.
