Bodie played his role. He did what he was told to do, very well. His lack of upward mobility was moreso a product of his crew being broken up. If the Barksdale crew didn't get fukked up by the cops/feds/Marlo, surely we can all agree Bodie would have risen up the ranks right.

Exactly. With Barksdale in prison and Stringer running things...Slim Charles was basically his #2 but it's not hard to foresee Bodie becoming his #3 if things hadn't fallen to shyt. If not for the war and the cops, Bodie would have been running a tower (until they were torn down).
