I hate Drake, but I'm not going to pretend like I don't see his appeal or why he's popular.
There's not really one thing that makes him popular. He just is. There's not a scientific method to it. Every reason that's been given as to why he's popular could be applied to a lot of rappers. The difference is that they aren't as popular.

To add to that, the dude can spit idgaf what nobody says. When Drake wants to go in on a verse, he boutta do that. He found the perfect formula, he has an ideal mainstream combination of quality melodies, singing, and rapping.

It was a perfect storm for this dud.
-Wayne was the hottest rapper when he came on, so it was like the Mase/Puffy combo
-he was something different, in the sense he could sing. Ja couldn't sing.
-the state of hip hop & culture was shifting. A new generation coming in.
-because of said shift, people knew his past & his origins. Kind of like Em in 8 Mile laying out everything before he got dissed. What was there to diss if you knew his cheeseyness ahead of time?
-Appeals to women. Some as LL/Ja.
