I'm not sure what your point is considering I can do the same in front of a dispensary or a dealer's house.

Because the gov and media went on a campaign to show smoking in a bad light. Persuasive ads, studies, you’re taught smoking is bad in school, and general disgust for smokers. That worked 
Now, drinking kills a ton of people too, but because nearly everybody drinks, society has brushed it under the rug
I used to smoke cigs and drink heavily. I quit drinking and cigs years ago, but I still use a Juul on occasion. Vaping is more more socially acceptable, I guess due to no smoke

i dont think "drinking" is considered sophisticated in general, just prestigious high-end drinks

i would say 1 because weed is illegal in most states still 2. marketing especially marketing in social settings and 3. The evil side of alcohol is swept under the rug - health issues, binging/benders, addiction, and crime (3 million violent crimes per year under the influence of alcohol)

Yeah, and it failed miserably. People like to drink, and nobody can stop them. I guess it’s like weed now. People like to get high, and the government is adapting by legalizing it in specific states
