they really fuct up with Simcity by requiring online, but not being ready with the servers. there also seemed to be some dubious claims as to why it was required to be online. that's a big issues here: is the online aspect really required so the game will work, or just DRM?
but my point was more about these concepts of what it means to 'own' a game, and be able to play it 10 years from now. it's inherent in the structure of some of these games that that won't be possible. this goes back to what I said in another thread about people wanting to have their cake and eat it. people want these open-world, persistent, mmo-type games, but they expect the hardware to work like an NES
No the online aspect is not required in this case. You can find videos of people running it offline just fine, and Maxis has admitted multiple times that it can run offline with no issues, just that EA as the publisher said...it has to be online all the time...
And yeah, when it comes to games, If I want to play a 10 year old game, I should be able to, because I paid money for it. Now, a 10 year old system, realistically, is gonna have some miles on it. Gonna have some instances where it fell of the table, kids/cousins kicking it around, power surges from thunderstorms...and all of that stuff is acceptable, because that is just normal everyday stuff that happens to consoles, so if I try to play it and the console is just to old and busted, that is a loss I can take. But to put the game in, have it work, then get a "these servers have been removed" error messages forever? Nah....that is bogus...
Put it like this...would you buy a game if they put a disclaimer on it that said "may not be able to play after 6 years?"
