Why is it hard for the modern human to accept being average?

Most of y’all have average lives, have average jobs, average significant others, average problems, but won’t admit it to yourselves and others. Why is that?

I think one of the problems that the internet caused is exposing things that people would never see. When you see someone spend your monthly salary on a watch. That shyt will make you feel some type of way. Especially if you not really a hustler go getter type nikka
I think you answered your own question dude. :yeshrug: You are right about the internet. We do live in a society that says buy a product to make anything better in life. While people are buying stuff so they won't be average...someone else is getting paid. We have been conditioned to think this way. If you like documentaries, youtube "The Men Who Made Us Spend". It's three parts but worth watching. May change your perspective on consumerism.

nikka whatchu talmbout. This thread ain’t about me. Besides Stoicism is just a coping mechanism. It’s the philosophical equivalent of sticking your head on the sand :russ:
You are incorrect. This thread is about you. You made the claim, your observation is your own not anyone else's. So you made it about you the moment you decied to type.

Stoicism while flawed isn't at coping mechanism. It's the first step on an incomplete path. Stoicism is the same as aesthcisim in its infant stages. You just have to keep walking the path .

I don’t think I was clear I was wondering why can’t people admit to being average.

For example, Kevin samuels asked females what they rate themselves from 1-10 every females said they were a 7 that’s statistically impossible.

My point is nobody will admit to being average in any aspect of life.

People aren't content because they are told they should aspire to what others tell them to. Instead of peace of mind and love of self. Contentedness will never come from outside. Especially not in a consumer society.
Nice post and I agree. People who are content ironically are looked down upon. There are some people who are perfectly fine making just enough to pay their bills and live their life. Others will look at them and say they lack ambition.

It permeates everything in our lives. Everything has to be, faster, stronger, more efficient etc.

Like why couldn’t they stop at IPhone 8?

Why does every company on the stock market NEED turn a profit every quarter? This isn’t sustainable. In life you take Ls

Subconsciously we are just trying to not get left behind in this rapidly changing world.

I was actually thinking about this on the way to work. Marketing department’s are really propaganda machines. The way they do their ads is like psy ops. Them guys will MAKE you feel some type of ways if you don’t have the latest.

majority of people i know dont have a problem saying theyre regular

outside the internet and people who pursue attention i dont think theres a lack of clarity or understanding; it only becomes an “admitting” that youre average if youre ashamed with it

a lot of people ive met across my life get up do what they have to do and go home

you’ll always have entertainers and people that want more but a lot of folk are cool where theyre at

I also think there's a ton of messaging on the Internet, though social media and other avenues, that constantly bombard people with the idea that living an average life is bad, and that if you're not special your life is worthless.

That's why I think anxiety and depression is up nowadays too.

That said, I think the desire to be special/not average has been around for a while. Think of all the people who'd go to participate in gold rushes back in the day. And I'm sure there's more examples of behavior like that. So there's always been some sort of desire for many (maybe identification with the ego?) that prompts such sentiments. I do think, as you mentioned, the Internet and specifically social media has aggravated those tendencies and made them worse in modern times.

I would say social media, advertising, and entertainment and comparing yourself to others.

On a single day I could pick my phone and login to any forum or IG and find some post telling me I ain’t shyt because I don’t make 6 figures yet (close but not there yet) and don’t have a business. Then that guy or girl is gonna post a pic in a Maserati or g wagon or something telling me to level up or you’re not a real man. Alright.

I turn on TV and see commercials for Zales, Royal Caribbean and Disney cruises and recall how some of my colleagues seem to be able to take at least 6 of them per year. I take 1 or 2 and I’m like damn. How do y’all this so often?

Then I get in my car and hear a rapper insult me for driving an Accord (which I remember being so happy when I bought it) and that he’ll flash a few bills and come take my girl and add her to his roster :mjlol: :mjcry:

Those dating apps also did not help. When I used to be on them the amount of ridiculous requirements people would have on there would be depressing. Don’t message me if you don’t have XYZ.

Of course you later realize that a good number of those people are just pretending and are either scamming, in debt, or faking it till they make it. And there are some that really have it.

I think that all these things help contribute to this.

When I used to volunteer overseas people just seemed happier than the do here though they had waaaaaaay less.

The internet has def fueled mass and wasteful consumption by producers projecting an image and consumers buying into it.
