Why is pop/catchy music frowned upon in hip-hop/R&B?

For example, The Weeknd released his album Beauty Behind the Madness and people say he fell off. However, BBTM was his catchiest album and the one album that is very easy to digest. It's fun.

In hip-hop, Drake dropped Views and it has fun records, but people say that it's bad because Drake went pop. J.Cole dropped "Work Out" and people claimed that he sold out, but "Work Out" is one of his best songs to me.

Is music automatically worse if it's catchy? Isn't that the point of music?

The answer to your question is that when you are discussing music with snobs liked the ones that frequent this site you get a host of people that take music way too serious and think music should be deep, complex and have the answers to life

You talk about music in the real world, you get people that want music that makes you feel good, dance, and be a soundtrack to a good time

The artist you used as an example the Weeknd is a good one.

But like @Buckeye Fever said, I think you need both... And th artist that are able to do both are usually the biggest artist( Jay z, Drake, future, the weeknd, etc)

HipHop and R&B are Pop. Whats looked down on is watered down trash that lacks Soul, not catchy music
False.

Its a pop market that migrates twords hip hop and rnb.

Hip hop never was and will be categorized as popular music.

And you just said it:most pop music is watered down trash.

But why do you think we need both? Why don't you just listen to catchy pop music that makes you feel good all the time? Why don't Drake, Future and Jay Z just put out albums with pop hits on every track? Wouldn't they make more money that way?

No one listens to music to be miserable, they listen to it based upon relatability. And artists make music based upon their feelings just as much as listeners listen to music based upon how they are feeling etc. music in all genres reflects the artists feelings. Which not always deep and introspective

Punk music is just as much as a sub culture and there is just as much catchy music with pop song structure influence. Majority of music is written with pop song writing structure

"Pop" is whatever is popping in/to the masses regardless of the actual genre

Hip hop never was and will be categorized as popular music.

:dwillhuh: HipHop has been "pop" music for over 25 years

I never said most pop music was trash. The pop music that's trash is the type when people intentionally set out to make simple cookie cutter music that appeals to the masses.

because hip hop is NOT pop music. It's defiant subculture. Do you understand what I mean by that?

Hip hop is a culture, rap is the music of said culture. Not the same. Just as much as hardcore is the music of punk culture. It's not always hand in hand. Not all the music reflects the progressive forward thinking nature of the root of culture. That's how every single defiant subculture of music is. What makes hip hop different? You're being idealistic based upon the box you've put hip hop into and not realistic.

I'm not sure what type of answer you are looking for...

I like both types of music.

The thread is about why songs like " Drunk in Love " are hated on here while songs like "Momma" is praised to the high heavens

I think you should look up the definition of popular music and the term crossover.

Why do you think they have differant charts for music?

Hip hop crosses over to the Pop charts.

Rap music doesnt debut on pop charts (unless its a marketing plan)
