I don’t get it. Jersey has tons of basketball & football talent and they’re nicely located where they can pick off New York and PA talent.

Why are they so bad?

:francis:Its a loadad question but if you want the real specific breakdown, no BS here it is:

1. Politics. Theres been inconsistent support from the big wigs who can really make a difference. Rutgers didnt start giving a shyt about sports until the 2000's. All the big-money Alumni attended Rutgers during a time when RU athletics was utter trash, like C-USA bottomfeeder status... so today in 2018, the rich old grads have no school spirit to make the necessary donations. Also there are some higher ups (they call theselves the Rutgers 100) at the institution that want Rutgers to remain academically focused and abandon sports. Makes it difficult to get the necessary support to keep up with surrounding powerhouses.

2. Money. The Big Ten money doesnt start rolling in until 2022. They havent even had dedicated practice facilities until this year. For those that don't know, that is a HUGE game changer in both development and recruiting. Can't be overstated enough. Once the athletic program could finally become financially self-sustaining with that fresh Big 10 check, things will change.

3. Recruiting/Coaching. When Schiano left he was replaced with the worst recruiter in the history of D1 College football, no exaggeration. WOAT class rankings and 40% of his classes would transfer within 2 years of enrolling. He has since been replaced by the DCoordinator of Ohio State's championship squad and he's currently rebuilding so we'll see what happens with that. The new mens bball coach has been pulling in some dope recruiting classes lately.

4 Fanbase. NJ college sports fans are fairweather is it gets. New Jersey is pro sports country. Yankees/Mets/Rangers/Nets/Jets/Giants/Devils/Eagles/Phillies. Theres so many other teams to watch, so theyre only going to ride for Rutgers sports if theyre winning. Make no mistake in '06, Ray Rice and them were worshipped as GODS in the tri-state area. But if you are losing they not gonna waste their time with you.

I could keep going but the bottom line is that Its kind of complicated and theres a bunch of resons why.
sidenote: The men's basketball team is going to be a problem next year. Listen to me now, believe me later on :sas2:

Most of the elite programs in Jersey are prep schools. So the elite schools in both basketball and football are plucking them left and right

I.e
Kyrie Irving (Montclair)
Andre Bynum (St Joseph)
Jay Williams (st Joseph)
JR Smith - (St Benedict) even tho he skipped college, he committed to UNC)
Luel Deng (Blair)
Tristan Thomson (st Benedict)
Karl Anthony (st Joseph)
Joakim Noah (Lawrencville)
Marrief/Marcus Morris
Tyler Ennis (st Benedict)
Charlie Villenueva (Blair academy)
Kyle Anderson- some catholic school

Then the other elite guys like Kidd Gilchrist, Shaq, Earl Clark, Hassan Whiteside, Dejuan Wagner, Sam Delembart, Randy Foye, Kenneth Farried, Tim Thomas, Al Harrington, etc had no interest in Rutgers, no chance in hell..

Rutgers football and basketball have no real history of any sustained success. As mentioned before, traditional power programs have come in and raided Jersey talent and they've been doing it for decades. In football, Notre Dame and Penn State probably consider Jersey kids in-state. Before Schiano came along, Rutgers had only appeared in one bowl game and 3 players picked in the top 3 rounds of the NFL draft. In Basketball, again lack of history. It's been 35 years since Rutgers won an NCAA tournament game and almost 30 years since they've been in the tournament period. Rutgers main recruiting base was also a major base for much more successful Big East & ACC programs. And kids who wanted to stay home had a much better in-state option in Seton Hall.

Rutgers is a really good school but the campus is kinda disjointed and in sports they're a small fish in a pond with big fish. And while the pond has gotten bigger since moving to the Big 10, the fish have gotten a lot bigger as well. Rutgers still won't get a full share of the Big 10 TV revenue until 2020-21. They're getting less than 20% this year, slightly less than 30% next year and slightly less than 40% the year after that. On top of that, comparing apparel deals, the total value of the deal Rutgers signed with Adidas last year is 23 times less than the deal Ohio State signed with Nike 2 years ago. They likely won't even be able to compete until they're financially level with the rest of the Big 10 (TV money wise) 3 years from now.

Bottom line not enough advantages and too many disadvantages compared to competitor schools. And until they can find their next Schiano, a legit program building coach who can recruit their ass off, Rutgers will be non-factors and doormats in the Big 10 for the forseeable future in football and basketball.

I can see your point for basketball, but for football there are no options in NY or Philly that are better.

Penn State, although that's a few hours away from Norh Jersey. Also, Temple's probably on Rutgers' level football-wise.

Most Jersey talent want to get out of Jersey in any way possible, so they go to out-of state programs to get exposure.
