Why Is Smash Bros Melee Still So Popular?

Because of the game mechanics. Nerds found every glitch and exploit giving the game unlimited replay value.
Wavedashing, Dash Dodging, Spiking etc....not that I do any of that stuff...

There is a lot of tech but nintendo went out of their way to make smash u tournament friendly and people still gravitate towards Melee.
People played MvC2 for 15+ years but when MvC3 came out a lot of people hated but ran with it. I don't see why smash community doesn't.
From what I've read, yes it does. They balanced a bunch of shyt in Smash Bros 4 and Brawl, that's why Melee is still the most popular one.

Damn didn't know Nintendo did that. My only guess is after people were intially disappointed with Brawl and 4 they just went back to melee.

Not when it comes to spiking. I have taken GREAT joy in giving nikkas the Warrior's Way or the Wizard's Foot with Ganondorf.
There might be more mechanics/metagame but that doesn't make it better
. Aesthetically the game looks like a complicated piece of shyt and there's less viable characters than Smash U, as a spectator it's 
status. But playing it at a high level is very satisfying I will say. Brawl was probably the worst though
