Doesn't help that kryptonite is always written differently depending on the writer. Kryptonite effects on superman range from just about killing him from just being near it, to just losing his powers and being reduced to a normal human but not life threatening.
Krypton is not made of kryptonite, radiated pieces of krypton becomes kryptonite but the whole planet wasn't irradiated.

Thematically, his heritage is dangerous to him. He immigrated and took the heritage of Krypton with him but his physical "home" is dangerous.
In practice, I always thought it basically corrupted how his body absorbed solar energy when in proximity to it. That's why lead is the only way to contain the radiation around it.

Superman is not immune to radiation. Krypton isnt made of Kryptonite. That's like saying Earth is made of plutonium. Kryptonite is iradiated pieces of Krypton earth. Superman getting sick from kryptonite exposure is like us getting sick from exposure to Chernobyls core.
