I blame horrible representation of brothers in the media along with the second childhood/Peter Pan/Baby Boy mentality that too many brothers have.

People are bombarded by the media that black men have high HS drop out rates, are the secondary breadwinner if employed, unemployable, only care about a career in sports and rapping and are not supporting the kids we have. When a brother doesn't fit the stereotype it can be quite shocking I imagine for people who don't interact with brothers and the only exposure to black life is from TV and the media.
Thank you!

Hip-hop is the number one perpetuator of this peter pan/never grow up mentality amongst black men...just wanna smoke blunts all day, still tryna be rappers, not taking responsibility for actions, words, etc...

I find this more evident when the majority of rappers have the world "little" or "young" in their name.

Now that you mention this, I never thought of it like that. Kinda scary when you think about it.

There's a lot of missinformed people in this thread. I was raised to know that you do not let a white man call you a boy; even when I was at my hbcu the older male professors even said that. It's like calling you toby.

I never had someone call me boy; even when I was living in the south. Also; I have had people TRY to talk down to me, for example at work, but I shyt on them during the conversation. I shyt on them so bad that they next time they talk to me they start to stutter. It gets to the point that they just stop talking and put their heads down.

Don't let nobody call you a boy.

This is very true.

Like when I'm interacting with people...never get the benefit of the doubt. They always assume in the back of their minds that because I'm a black male that automatically I/I'm

Grew up without a father
Grew up poor
not educated
been to jail/have a criminal record
etc.

All of which are absolutely falkse.

Like the first impressions others get from are usually shatted upon the first five minutes I start talking to people. When I really start talking about myself...others just tend to just sit down or just stop talking or get intimidated and not want to continue the conversation cause they thought they could flex on me and couldn't...

Serious question... How do you know in the back of their mind what they assume? I mean I get that if they SAY/ACT a certain way you can understand that they feel a way, but how can you tell what someone is thinking about you without actual cues? If you're meaning to say that they are giving off verbal or non-verbal cues then I understand that.

People will only make you feel how you let them. Truth be told we all make assumptions (she is fat so she's lazy... he's short so he has an inferiority complex etc) but don't let what anybody thinks or assumes of you hold you back. Go after yours!

I don't want to make rap music the scape goat but it has a great influence. I loved gangsta rap and listened crazy shyt like the Geto Boys early albums but rocked with the political/ conscious music too. My mind was blown listening to KRS on you must learn and the Edutainment album back in the day. Ice Cube murked the game with Amerikkka's most wanted. These dudes showed you can be a "real nikka" and get love in the streets while being intelligent and dropping knowledge. I think around the mid 2000's it seemed like rappers began to take pride in acting and appearing dumb and the audience ate it up.

True...but this doesn't answer the question really posed in the thread title. This is indicative of a larger issue...like many things in life are.

I have no problem with being called "bro" or any derivative of that term...BTW.

The question is...why is the black man seen as a boy or kid?

Because that's what white supremacists called us

Oh I'm getting mine I'm just making conversation.

Trust me I receive a lot of non verbal cues to this stuff...I can read body language very well.

U wrong op. The black man is feared.

I essentially agree. But through all my 30 years on this planet I've noticed people deal with fear in certain ways. Some people will laugh at it. Some will belittle it. Some will approach it violently. It's just a way people will hide the fact they're scared without showing any semblance of fear or weakness.

I guess I misread then. If they are making non-verbal cues then yes you can tell what people are thinking about you because they aren't hiding it. Regardless...anyone who calls you "boy" :pacspit:
