how cant that be? before there were four divisions in each conference, there were 3. thus, a division winner still played in the wild card round back then.

You do realize Chargers actually beat the Broncos the second time they met, and kept the score close their first time?
The name isn't great, but it's usually because most the division winners are playing eachother this round.
Funny because it didn't work out that way at all this year. But there still is a majority division winners playing 5 to 3 wildcards
